Since its formation, in 1965, the Swansea Bach Choir has been associated with the very highest standards of choral excellence, and it has come to be regarded as one of Britain's leading chamber choirs. Its Director (and Founder), John Hugh Thomas, was awarded the OBE in 1996 for his remarkable contribution to choral music in Wales. Elin Manahan Thomas, the acclaimed young Welsh soprano who was the subject of a recent S4C documentary, has just signed a major new recording contract which is destined to bring her international fame.

THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

With a cast drawn from some of the major British opera companies (including the Welsh soprano Kate Woolveridge) Opera Box presents a fully-costumed production of the delectable comedy which is undoubtedly the composer's most famous opera. As is now traditional there will be an extended interval during which patrons will be able to enjoy their picnics on the beautiful lawns of one of Wales's finest gardens.

The revered and much respected Australian virtuoso has given recitals and concerto performances all over the world, and is a familiar figure at many leading international Festivals. For fourteen years he was engaged on the largest recording project ever undertaken by a solo musician - the entire piano music of Liszt - eventually completed in a total of no less than 95 CD's on the Hyperion label. He will present a programme entitled Great Russian Romantics. This will include two renowned sonatas in B flat minor, Rachmaninoff's No.2 , Opus 35 and Glazunov's No.l, Opus 74, as well as works by Balakirev and Borodin.

A TRIBUTE TO DILYS ELWYN-EDWARDS

The distinguished musicologist, broadcaster and teacher, whose reflections on Welsh composers have become an eagerly- anticipated feature of the Festival, will consider the work of a much-loved figure, whose song output represents perhaps one of the finest attainments of Welsh vocal music. Dr. Davies will be accompanied by a leading young singer from the Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Allegri String Quartet
ALLEGRI STRING QUARTET
With Richard Lester (Cello)

"The shimmer and grace and intelligence of this ensemble is riveting", wrote the music critic of the Independent on Sunday in 2004, and the Allegri has continued to attract the most enthusiastic reviews. They will be performing Quartets by Haydn (Op. 20 No.6 in A major) and Beethoven (Op. 80 No.4 in C minor) and will be joined by the leading cellist, Richard Lester, in a performance of a work regarded as one of the loftiest pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire, Schubert's sublime C major Quintet D956.

Frequently hailed as one of this country's most versatile artists, Melanie Marshall's style encompasses jazz, opera, oratorio, musical theatre and cabaret. She is currently appearing in Sir Trevor Nunn's production of Porgy and Bess at the Savoy Theatre in London.

Jonathan Lemalu
JONATHAN LEMALU - Baritone
MICHAEL HAMPTON - Piano

Jonathan Lemalu, a New Zealand born Samoan, is already among the very forefront of today's young generation of singers. An exclusive recording artist for EMI classics, Jonathan's debut recital disc was awarded the Gramophone Magazine Debut Artist of the Year award. He has performed with some of the world's greatest conductors, at leading opera houses such as the New York Metropolitan, Glyndebourne and Covent Garden and at major festivals such as Edinburgh, Salzburg, Munich, Tanglewood and the BBC Proms. In 2002 he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Award for Young Artist of the Year. In a fascinating programme of songs by Roger Quilter, Benjamin Britten, Aaron Copland and Richard Rodney-Bennett he will be partnered by Michael Hampton, who broadcasts regularly both as a lieder accompanist and a chamber music player.

Under the baton of Sioned James, Côrdydd has already played a leading role in the renaissance of Welsh choral singing. It is regarded as one of the nation's leading young mixed choirs and performs a dynamic and interesting programme of both classical and contemporary works. Cordydd becomes the very first choir to make a return visit to the Festival, following its memorable contribution to the 2004 event.
