RSS Feeds
What is RSS?
RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of frequently changing web sites or pages (such as the BBC or this page!). It enables you to find out whenever content changes or is updated and receive this information (known as Feeds or News Feeds) without navigating to the web site.
In order receive these feeds you need some software called a News Reader (also called an aggregator). This is very worthwhile you you frequently visit the same sites to check for updates. For example, there are about 30 web sites and blogs (web logs) that I frequently visit for articles on web design, coding and web standards. By using a News reader I need not visit each site but receive all new articles automatically.
Where do I get a News Reader
There are two types of News Readers / Aggregator:
- online such My Yahoo or NewsIsFree
- desktop software which must be downloaded onto your own computer such as BlogBridge or FeedDemon
Some are free, some have free, functionally reduced versions, and some you must buy. In most cases a free version will suit your needs (I use BlogBridge). Note that many are Operating system dependent (i.e. they only work on Windows or Macs).
Incidentally, the news column on the right is provided by an RSS Feed from the BBC - much easier than manually updating this page every few hours!
